Al Ahli deny Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr first Saudi trophy in shootout loss

Published

on

Cristiano Ronaldo’s wait for a first trophy with Al-Nassr continues after the Riyadh giants suffered a painful defeat to Al-Ahli on penalties in Saturday’s Saudi Super Cup final.

This is despite the Portuguese star opening the scoring in regulation time.

The clash, staged in Hong Kong as part of the Kingdom’s global sporting expansion, ended 2–2 after 90 minutes before Al-Ahli held their nerve in the shootout to lift the trophy.

Ronaldo struck in the 40th minute, calmly dispatching a penalty after Al-Ahli defender Ali Majrashi was judged to have handled inside the box.

His finish sent the packed stadium into raptures and looked set to provide the 39-year-old with a long-awaited piece of silverware in Saudi football.

But Al-Ahli, buoyed by their star-studded lineup, hit back swiftly.

Former Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessié restored parity with a crisp strike, punishing slack defending and shifting the momentum back towards the Jeddah side.

The second half delivered even more drama.

Marcelo Brozović seized on a loose ball to put Al-Nassr back in front, only for Al-Ahli through Ibanez to level again in the dying moments and drag the contest to penalties.

The shootout proved decisive.

Al-Ahli’s composure contrasted sharply with Al-Nassr’s missed spot-kicks, sealing a famous victory and condemning Ronaldo and his teammates to yet another final disappointment.

The club lost 5-3 on penalties with both scoring their first three each. Ronaldo, Brozovic and Felix took the kick in that order for Al-Nassr.

While Al Ahli scored the fourth, Al-Nassri missed and converting the last gave the former the victory.

This was Al-Nassr’s sixth appearance in the final—the joint most appearances in the competition—while it was only Al-Ahli’s second.

The defeat means Ronaldo has now lost all three finals since joining Al-Nassr — the 2023 Saudi Super Cup, the 2023 King’s Cup, and now the 2025 edition of the Super Cup.

For a player with one of the most glittering careers in football history, the wait for silverware in Saudi Arabia is proving unusually elusive, PUNCH Online reports.

His only trophy so far is the Arab Club Champions Cup (2023)—not deemed an official title by FIFA.

For Ronaldo and Al-Nassr, the heartbreak in Hong Kong is yet another reminder that their journey to domestic dominance remains unfinished — and that even one of football’s greatest winners cannot escape the cruelty of finals.

Spurs beat Man City to maintain flawless start

Published

on

Tottenham Hotspur made it back-to-back Premier League victories under new manager Thomas Frank by stunning Manchester City once again at the Etihad Stadium.

Spurs came here last November and inflicted a 4-0 humbling of City in a scintillating performance and went home once more with all three points courtesy of a resolute defensive display.

They started slowly as Omar Marmoush latched onto Pedro Porro’s loose header and squeezed a shot narrowly wide of the far post before seeing a thunderous strike from range pushed away by Guglielmo Vicario.

The Egyptian was lively early on and forced another excellent save from the Spurs goalkeeper after being played through by Erling Haaland.

With their first real threat of the game, Spurs took the lead courtesy of a lightning breakaway as Richarlison’s low cross was converted by Brennan Johnson.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but overturned following a review by the video assistant referee.

With seven minutes added on in the first half because of an injury to City left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, Spurs doubled their lead through Joao Palhinha smashing in after a loose pass from James Trafford inside his own area.

It capped a difficult few minutes for the City keeper who could have been dismissed for a collision on the edge of the box with Mohammed Kudus.

Haaland should have pulled one back before the break but headed over from close range and the home side were left frustrated in the second period as Tottenham made it consecutive clean sheets so far this season.

Eyes on Conte as Napoli begin title defence

Published

Napoli travel to Sassuolo this afternoon for their opening game of the 2025-26 Serie A season, with Antonio Conte’s side eager to defend their Scudetto title.

Speaking to the press ahead of today’s match, Conte discussed several topics, including the injury suffered by Romelu Lukaku, Napoli’s place as favourites and his club’s summer transfer market.

With quotes taken via the Corriere dello Sport, Conte kicked off the conference by discussing Lukaku’s injury: “It is a significant injury for a player who had a specific importance for the team. We know full well that situations like this can arise throughout the year. Something similar happened last year too and I am not just talking about injuries but also the transfer market.

“The lads showed last year that they can cope with anything. We must not complain but instead find solutions. I haven’t even spoken to the lads about it because injuries are part of the game. Now we need to work to make our players shine.”

Conte’s Napoli won the Scudetto last season, narrowly pipping Inter to the title on the final day of the season. Much of the Neapolitan side remains the same, with no star player sales aside from Victor Osimhen, who was already not involved in the squad during the 2024-25 campaign.

Talking about his squad, Conte said: “This group does not need to repeat the work they did last year. We are talking about responsible guys who want to work hard and improve day after day. What I have highlighted is historic, because Napoli have never won two consecutive Scudetti. Let’s remember that Napoli finished tenth in the season before last, having only sold Kim; that must be clear. We must win and lose together. It will be a tough championship with many well-equipped teams and our job will be to do our best.
