Burna Boy: I could be committing fraud or stealing oil if not for music
Burna Boy, the Grammy winner, has opened up about what his life could have looked like if he had not pursued music.
In a now-viral video, the ‘Last Last’ hitmaker was asked what he would be doing outside the entertainment industry.
Burna Boy jokingly listed several alternatives in his response.
“There are many options. I could be stealing oil, you know. I could be playing basketball. What else? I could be a fraudster,” he said.
“You know what I mean? I could have been a suicide bomber. Anything. Even a prostitute.”
Born Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy gained fame after releasing ‘Like to Party’, the lead single from his debut album ‘L.I.F.E’ (2013).
Since breaking into the mainstream more than a decade ago, he has established himself as one of Africa’s most successful artistes, known for his genre-blending style and chart-topping albums.
He has released several albums: ‘L.I.F.E’ (2013), ‘On a Spaceship’ (2015), ‘Outside’ (2018), ‘African Giant’ (2019), ‘Twice As Tall‘ (2020), ‘Love, Damini‘ (2022) and ‘I Told Them‘ (2023).
Burna Boy has also won several awards. In 2021, the Afro-fusion artiste won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammy Awards for ‘Twice As Tall’.
Last month, the singer released his eighth studio album titled ‘No Sign of Weakness’.
Burna Boy revealed that the album’s title reflects his resilience in overcoming life’s toughest challenges.
The 34-year-old artiste said despite facing numerous obstacles that could have ended his life or career, he never showed weakness.

Olamide responds to backlash over Wizkid ranking
Rapper Olamide has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent comment ranking Wizkid as the top Afrobeats act after Fela Kuti.
TheTrustNews.com reports that the uproar began after Olamide made the remark during a press briefing in Toronto, Canada.
The rapper acknowledged differing opinions, saying the industry is wide enough for every artist to thrive.
Olamide emphasised that music lovers can support their preferred artists without diminishing others’ work.
He wrote: “Honestly, this whole lengthy 3-way conversation is pretty much whatever. You can’t diminish anyone’s greatness, whether they’re A-list, B-list, or anything else. Feel free to believe what you want or support whoever you choose – there’s plenty of room in the sky for everyone”.
He noted that top artists like Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid are unfazed by opinions, focusing on their craft instead.
“However, one thing to remember is that Burna, David, and Wiz aren’t narrow-minded enough to get offended by someone else’s opinion or perspective. That’s part of why they’ve reached where they are today,” Olamide wrote, urging fans to respect differing views.

I contemplated suicide after BBNaija disqualification – Beauty Tukura
Former Miss Nigeria and Big Brother Naija contestant Beauty Tukura has spoken about her struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts following her disqualification from the show.
In an interview on BeyondWithEzinne podcast, Tukura revealed she felt overwhelmed by public scrutiny and shame, leading to a dark period where she nearly took her life.
She said: “I was depressed, I feel like my life ended. I was living in a dark room for weeks and in between, I will do therapy.
“I cried every day. I was thinking of ending it. I almost actually committed suicide.
“The heat was too much, and personally, I felt like nothing I said was going to make sense because all they wanted to do was crucify me like Jesus. It was very hard”.
According to her, after disqualification, she struggled to face her parents, admitting, “I was too ashamed to see them. I didn’t know how to face them. I was in a very bad place.”
Tukura praised her parents’ unwavering support and messages from fans worldwide, which helped her cope and focus on the positive.
“I decided to focus on the love. Since then, I’ve always focused on the positive messages,” she said.
The experience was a turning point for Tukura, who has since reflected on mistakes and the lessons learned.
“That was the lowest point of my life, and I’ve decided it will stay that way. There’s no room for such mistakes anymore,” she said.
